They were mostly based at PARAMOUNT in their previous incarnation (“A Quiet Place”), but were producers alongside BLUMHOUSE on the prolific “Purge” franchise at UNI, and Bay just did “Ambulance” there of course. No initial projects announced but guessing they aim to keep a big toe in the low budget genre. /Deadline LA Times details numerous Fraud accusations and just a boatload of dirt on action movie producer Randall Emmett Ok this read is just wow…🤯 Emmett is was of course half of the EMMETT / FURLA production co behind 24 Bruce Willis pics, and many others in what we used to call the ‘direct to DVD’ genre. Randall left the company recently, and just stared a new production entity CONVERGENCE ENTERTAINMENT fwiw. Really just so much here, starting with several accounts of sleazy behavior toward women including some $$ NDA payouts. Plus assistant horror stories, $11 Million paydays for DeNiro for a week’s work, fraud lawsuits… and much more. This is quite a read. Via Giphy “Cake Boss” moves from WBD kingdom over to A+E Buddy signed a multi-platform deal for 60 hours of new programming, including a LIFETIME movie starring Buddy and his family. /Variety PEACOCK un-orders their “Field of Dreams” TV series that they ordered last year Mike Schur (“The Good Place”, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” etc) was creating / writing it after recieving a straight-to-series order about a year ago… but PEACOCK now says they don’t want it, so sister division UNIVERSAL TV is now shopping it elsewhere. So if you’re up for a series from an EMMY winning showrunner based on an OSCAR nominated film ⚾️ - give UNI TV a call. /THR NBC revives “Magnum P.I.” with a 2 season order 10 episodes a season (will bring the show to 96 episodes total). CBS of course cancelled it after 4 years back in May. Show is a co-production with CBS STUDIOS and UNIVERSAL TV. CBS has domestic syndie rights, UNI TV sells the show internationally. No word on where / how the show might fit into NBC’s 2022-23 season. /Deadline FREEFORM orders thriller series “The Watchful Eye” from producer Ryan Seacrest Stars Mariel Molino (ABC’s ”Promised Land”) as a woman who gets a job with a rich family and apparently has some secrets that they don’t know about 😲. I mean hey who doesn’t… but I’m guessing they relate to the family here. Julie Durk (”Grace and Frankie”) created it, Emily Fox (”Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) is the showrunner. /THR ALSO IN TV FOX cancels “Duncanville” after 3 Seasons. /Variety APPLE TV does COMIC CON for the first time ever - Doing events for 6 shows - ”See”, ”Severance”, “For All Mankind”, “Mythic Quest”, “Invasion” and ”Foundation”.  /Deadline PEACOCK sets Sarah Hyland to host “Love Island USA”, the iteration of the CBS show that ‘s now shifting to streaming. /Deadline 📝 IN OTHER WORDS… "I have to underscore that we are in serious times here and the headwinds are fierce.” - META Chief Product Officer CHRIS COX in a cheerful memo to staff yesterday indicating that yeah… the rest of 2022 Revenue picture may be a bit dark. Plus - the BIG10 err… 12, err… 14 technically just got big new ammo as it’s heavily in the midst of setting a new TV / Streaming deal starting in 2023 (FOX and ESPN have the current deal). There is also a BIG10 Cable network which… could conceivably go to a streamer for the right price next year too (although unlikely). The BIG10 was thought to be pretty far along in their new rights deal for over $1 Billion a year, but this takes it up a notch - APPLE TV apparently put themselves back in the mix after yesterday’s news. SBJ has a lot more details on the media players in the mix in that link for the inclined. The LA teams will join the conference beginning in the 2024 season, leaving the PAC-12 right just as they’re looking to sign a new TV deal themselves 📺. “We have worked hard to ground our university decisions in what is best for our students.” - USC Prez Carol L. Folt And what’s good for our students… is a big ‘ol check for the University that will definitely not lower tuition costs in any regard. But have fun paying to constantly fly student-athletes to PA, OH and NJ for games in the middle of a semester! And LA alumni: Enjoy all of those now-10am college football start times 👍. /Deadline PEACOCK doubles Upfront Ad revenue to hit $1 Billion Not too many details other than that overall Austin Powers-ish declaration… but certainly going in the right direction (it had $500 Mil last year). Although with all of NBC’s current shows leaving HULU in Sept to be PEACOCK-only, guessing that helps here. Also helps that NETFLIX and DISNEY+ aren’t launching their Ad supported tiers til end of year. That $1 Billion is just part of NBCU’s overall $7+ Billion Upfronts take this year (NBCU declined to make any specifics avail other than it was their best total take yet, and they previously did $7 Bil so… there ya go). /THR AMAZON signs CHAMPIONS LEAGUE deal in the UK in tandem with BT SPORT BT SPORT currently has all the League rights, and is still keeping most of them in the deal that goes from 2024 to 2027… But this new deal gives AMAZON PRIME 20 exclusive weekly matches on Tuesday nights. Ah so that’s where their Indian Cricket budget $$ is going instead. UM 🙋‍♂️ What is the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE? It’s kind of a League with teams from other leagues, featuring 32 top soccer football clubs from all the major leagues in EUROPE, who play each other in matches throughout the year, entirely separate from their usual “local” leagues (PREMIERE LEAGUE in UK, LA LIGA in SPAIN, etc). It culminates in some playoffs in the Spring, and a highly-rated Championship typically in May. BT SPORT is in the midst of forming a joint-venture 🤝 with WBD’s EUROSPORT network, so this will potentially put AMAZON PRIME and WBD in the Sports business together if that BT SPORT - EUROSPORT deal closes (still being examined by UK regulators). BLOOMBERG puts the BT & AMAZON combined UK rights for this new, 3 year CHAMPIONS LEAGUE deal at around $1.8 Billion / $600 Million a year, a 20+% rate increase. OR: About the same per-year rate for Indian IPL Cricket streaming rights. No exact word on how much AMAZON is paying specifically here, although some reports have it at about 1/3 of the total cost ($240 Mil a year for 20 matches essentially). The deal also includes rights to something called the EUROPA LEAGUE for BT SPORT. (EUROPA LEAGUE is also run by UEFA, which is the organization that runs the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE). AMAZON PRIME also has CHAMPIONS LEAGUE rights in GERMANY and ITALY, and now adds a presence in the League’s biggest market of the UK, where it also streams a PREMIERE LEAGUE package of games. For the record CANAL+ beat out AMAZON for the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE rights in FRANCE. CBS / PARAMOUNT+ has some rights to the League here in the US. /THR AUDIENCE SIZE: This year’s CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Final got audiences from 6 to 10 Million in each major European country, and had just under 3 Million viewers here on CBS. /SportsProMedia ALSO IN MEDIA TELEVISA UNIVISION is launching their Spanish-language streaming service VIX+ on Thu July 21. $7 a month here, $6 a month in MEXICO. 10k hours of TV & Movie content. Plus LIGA MX and CHAMPIONS LEAGUE streaming rights (though thinking that may just be in MEXICO, as CHAMPIONS LEAGUE is at CBS / PAR+ in the US… unless there’s a Spanish-language carve-out). /THR ENDEAVOR slashes acquisition price of gambling tech co OPEN BET by $400 Million. So instead of the $1 Bil cash and $200 Mil in EDR stock from the September deal announcement… it’s now $750 Mil in cash, and $50 Mil in stock.
